Mud House
Surat, Gujarat
Located in the serene landscape of Dumas, Surat, this residence is a sensitive response to its site, climate, and context. The home features rammed earth walls as its primary construction material—partially made using soil excavated directly from the site. These earthen walls reduce environmental impact while lending the spaces a warm, textured, and organic quality that grounds the structure in its environment. These walls not only reduce environmental impact but also impart a warm, organic character to the home.
A total of 24 modular earthen walls were crafted using a carefully calibrated mix of mud, sand, water, and a minimal amount of concrete. This blend results in a structure that is both sustainable and durable. Atop the earthen structure rests a cantilevered steel roof, designed to offer shade, allow natural ventilation, and filter in diffused daylight throughout the day. Spatially, spaces like the bedroom and dining area are seamlessly connected to outdoor views through full-height glazing, blurring the boundaries between inside and out.
