Commoner's Kitchen
Surat, Gujarat
The Café is tucked on a residential street in Surat, as part of a Residential bungalow with the owners still residing on the upper floor. This residential space was previously rented out to a boutique and now to be transitioned into a cafe. The space was the next step for a home-grown burger joint called The Commoner’s Kitchen with the brief given to break away from the idea of how of a food joint/burger joint should look like and rather focus on elevating the customer experience by creating a more evocative and engaging space that welcomes conversations and lingering coffee breaks. Here the challenging part was balancing the integrity of the residential space with the character of a café.
Responding to the existing arches on site we characterised the aesthetics of the space by adding vaults. Thus, the idea of series of arches and vaults which create framed views.
A sense of unassuming serenity speaks throughout the project as a result of the restraint in the overall material palette.
