Peeping House
Surat, Gujarat
Situated on a plot area of 1410 sqft., the house is located in a closely-knit community in Ghod dhod, Surat. The façade, modular composition and the typology of openings responds to the characteristics of the street which is narrow and of little social value. This environment has largely conditioned the design of the entire house, which looks inwards and displays a more subtle and stoic image to the outside. The concept was to integrate the spaces internally with minimum divisions, allowing more sunlight to get inside with large openings in the façade, but at the same time maintain privacy in the house with the use of small angular windows peeping out on the street .The use of simple and limited number of materials like wood and copper pipes highlight the original beauty of the construction materials exposed on the walls, beams and columns.
The intention was to spatially blur edges between the distinct spaces, also keeping in mind the need for privacy and family’s contemporary lifestyle.
